What we collect today
| Information | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pages and ZIP codes viewed, the status shown, steps marked done, skipped or undone, answers to home questions and checks, guide tools used, link opens, time on page | Each visit, unless your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control | To learn which tools help and what to build next |
| A random ID stored in your browser, device type (mobile or desktop), the website that sent you | Each visit, same exception | To count visits without knowing who you are |
| ZIP codes you ask for that aren't live yet | When you search one | To decide where to launch next |
| What you write in "What do you wish this did?" | When you send it | To find tools people want. Please leave out names and addresses |
Progress, home answers and notes you type into guides stay in your own browser and are never sent to us.
The flood lookup
If you check an address, it goes to our server once, which asks the U.S. Census Bureau where it is and then asks FEMA and California's Department of Water Resources about that spot. We don't save, log or cache the address; only the answer category (high, moderate or minimal) is kept, on your device.
How we use it and who sees it
- To run and improve the site and keep it secure. Usage counts are reviewed by Brace For It's owner on a private dashboard.
- Service providers. Cloudflare hosts the site and its database and stores our backups. GitHub runs our automated checks. They may use data only to provide those services.
- Aggregate reports. We may share or sell reports that show patterns across many homes, such as how many homes in a ZIP code have done their storm basics. These never identify a person or a device.
- Legal reasons, such as a valid court order.
We don't sell or share personal information, and we don't use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We don't use third-party advertising cookies or trackers.
How long we keep it
Raw usage records for 24 months, then only aggregate counts. Nightly backups of the database are kept for 30 days, then deleted.
Your choices
- Turn on Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control to stop usage records.
- Clear your browser's site data to remove everything stored on your device, including the random ID.
- Email [email protected] with questions or a deletion request. We'll answer within 45 days.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit and stored with our hosting provider. No system is perfectly secure; we'll tell people promptly if a breach affects their information.
Children
Brace For It is meant for adults planning for their homes. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Coming later
Optional sign-in, email or text reminders, and offers from local partners are planned. None is open yet. Each will need your clear opt-in, and this policy will be updated before any of them starts.
